If you find yourself tossing and turning at night, your diet might be to blame. According to sleep experts, certain foods and drinks can interfere with the body’s natural sleep cycle, leaving you groggy and unrested the next day. A study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that one in eight Americans suffer from chronic insomnia, with dietary habits playing a key role in sleep disturbances.

Dan Gartenberg, PhD, a sleep health advisor, emphasizes the importance of a nutrient-rich diet for optimal sleep. While foods containing GABA—such as fermented foods and decaf teas—can promote relaxation, certain other foods disrupt rest.

Alcohol is one of the biggest culprits. While it may initially make you feel sleepy, it ultimately disrupts REM sleep and can cause multiple nighttime awakenings. Over time, alcohol-induced sleep disturbances can lead to chronic insomnia.

Caffeine, found in coffee, tea, and even chocolate, is another sleep thief. It blocks adenosine, a chemical that promotes sleepiness, keeping you wired long after consumption. Even decaf coffee contains some caffeine, making it best to avoid before bed.

Sugary snacks like chocolate and candy can also wreak havoc on sleep. The sugar spikes and crashes trigger restlessness, while chocolate contains small amounts of caffeine that further disrupt rest.

Citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons may seem like a healthy choice, but their high acid content can lead to reflux and heartburn, making it harder to sleep comfortably.

Spicy foods are another offender, raising body temperature and stimulating acid production, which can cause discomfort and sleep interruptions.

By avoiding these sleep-disrupting foods and opting for calming alternatives, you can set yourself up for better rest and overall well-being. Try swapping out caffeine for herbal teas and cutting back on sugar before bed—your body will thank you in the morning!
