This spectacular video was shot on September 30th, 2011, when “Red Tide” hit San Diego shores.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the organism, a phytoplankton called Lingulodinium polyedrum, has bloomed since late August, turning the water a brownish-red color in the daytime. The movement of the waves causes a chemical reaction that turns the tide a brilliant blue, visible only after night falls.
