The Humane Society has long been a key leader in the fight for Animal rights and welfare. From rescuing abused and abandoned animals, tirelessly advocating for change through successful ad campaigns, and promoting plant-based lifestyles through their popular “Meatless Monday” campaign, they are serving the entire world as ambassadors for change towards a more humane future. The organization has also worked with major food suppliers like Aramark to provide plant-based options to the public on a grand scale, and they have now partnered with Sodexo, one of the largest food suppliers for cafeterias in institutions like schools and universities, hospitals, the military, correctional facilities, and more.
The Humane Society’s talented chefs have worked with Sodexo’s culinary team to create plant-based dishes that are both nutritious and delicious. They have created 200 plant-based recipes, and in hopes of garnering interest from all consumers, vegans and non-vegans alike, they have concocted special menus like their “Y Más” Mexican-themed concept that features on-trend options like jackfruit and avocado tortas, chipotle quinoa burrito bowls, and garlic roasted cauliflower burritos. These new plant-based options will be featured on Sodexo menus at thousands of cafeterias across the U.S., and each individual institution operated by Sodexo can integrate these recipes into their typical menus, or use them to create separate plant-based “concept” restaurants within their dining halls.
The Humane Society applauds Sodexo for their cooperation and commitment to making their big business more humane and sustainable, in both increasing plant-based options and making efforts to improve animal welfare standards in its supply chain; something which The Humane Society has been working with Sodexo on.
Sodexo’s sustainability efforts have not gone unnoticed. On June 19th of this year, Sodexo announced that its Lair Marketplace at Loyola Marymount University earned over 400 GreenPoints on the Green Restaurant Association (GRA) certification scale. This is the first university dining facility to accomplish this. Barry Telford CEO, Universities West, Sodexo North America, stated, “We are so proud of our team at Loyola Marymount University. It is important to us and our clients that we prioritize sustainability efforts to lessen our environmental footprint on campus and in the surrounding community … This recognition demonstrates Sodexo’s commitment to our corporate responsibility roadmap outlined in our Better Tomorrow 2025 plan.”
This partnership between the Humane Society and Sodexo has great power to influence countless consumers. With 43 million Americans regularly choosing meat-free options, and 86 percent of them not even identifying as vegetarian or vegan, providing plant-based options to large populations is undoubtedly a wise financial decision for the Fortune 500 company. By providing alternatives that excel in taste and quality to giant institutions like universities, hospitals, and the military, they are helping spread the plant-based food movement far beyond the vegan sphere.
