According to reporting from The New York Times, scientists are raising fresh alarms about what ultraprocessed foods are really doing to our stomachs and intestines. These products dominate supermarket shelves and make up more than half of the calories many Americans eat. Now, new research suggests they may be disrupting the gut in ways that can increase the risk of serious digestive diseases and even colorectal cancer.
Much of this food is made with ingredients you would never find in a home kitchen. Researchers say this heavy processing strips away fiber and protective plant compounds that help Support a balanced gut microbiome. When those elements disappear, the good microbes in the intestines lose what they need to thrive, which can lead to inflammation and long term damage across the body and the wider environment. Several studies have shown strong links between diets high in ultraprocessed foods and higher rates of Crohns disease, irritable bowel syndrome and colorectal cancer. One large study of nurses found a forty five percent greater risk of precancerous polyps in women who ate the most ultraprocessed foods.
Scientists also warn about additives such as emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners. Small human trials and numerous rodent studies show that emulsifiers can thin the protective mucus layer of the gut and encourage harmful bacteria to grow. Artificial sweeteners may also upset the microbiome, trigger inflammation and worsen digestive symptoms. While researchers are still learning how these ingredients affect humans, the early evidence is concerning enough that many doctors recommend cutting back.
The good news is that shifting away from these products is easier than it seems. Swapping sodas for sparkling water, choosing fruits and vegetables, and adding more plant-based meals can Support gut health and reduce the overall burden ultraprocessed foods place on the earth. A diet that centers whole foods helps the body while also aligning with vegan values that protect animals and the planet.
Small choices add up. By choosing real food more often, you Support your health and take a simple step toward a kinder food system.
A healthier gut starts with small daily choices that nourish your body and Support a more compassionate environment.
