The Trump administration says the EPA will defend a strict rule to replace lead service lines within 10 years. The EPA told a federal appeals court it will defend the rule. It calls it the strongest overhaul of lead in drinking water standards in three decades.
According to Michael Phillis at the Associated Press, the rule was finalized in 2024. It lowers the action trigger to 10 parts per billion, down from 15. If systems hit that level, they must notify residents and act fast to cut exposure. They also have to plan for full pipe replacement, not just chemical treatment.
This matters because lead is a neurotoxin. It can harm children’s brains, raise adult blood pressure, and put basic health at risk. It can also threaten pets that drink from the tap.
The water utility trade group suing the EPA says the agency cannot force replacement of pipe sections on private property. It also argues the deadline is unrealistic, given labor shortages and other infrastructure work. The EPA says utilities have enough control to replace the full line. It also reviewed data from dozens of systems and says most can meet the timeline.
Lead pipes sit in older, industrial communities, including major cities like Chicago and Detroit. The updated rule also changes how lead is measured, so more places may learn they have a serious problem. That is tough news, yet it is better than guessing.
Still, the EPA is rolling back other protections. That includes some toxic emissions limits and parts of PFAS rules. So this decision stands out as a rare moment of follow through. Clean water is not optional on Earth, and it supports families, schools, and local wildlife.
Ask your city and state to replace every lead line and fund the work fairly. Then keep choosing plant based habits that cut Pollution upstream.
