Trump Administration Cuts Billions in Clean Energy Funding for Blue States

The Trump administration has announced it will slash nearly $8 billion in funding for climate and clean energy projects across 16 Democratic-led states, including California’s massive hydrogen hub. According to the Los Angeles Times, more than 300 grants tied to 223 projects were canceled, targeting efforts that would have advanced renewable energy and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

The cuts hit California’s Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems, or ARCHES, which had secured $1.2 billion under the Biden administration to build a clean hydrogen hub. The project was expected to create thousands of jobs and cut billions in health costs while transitioning away from polluting fuels. Other states impacted include New York, Oregon, Washington, and Massachusetts.

Critics blasted the move as political retaliation, since all 16 states affected voted against Trump in 2024. Meanwhile, Republican states working on similar projects — such as Texas, the largest producer of wind power in the U.S. — were not impacted. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the decision reckless, saying, “Clean hydrogen deserves to be part of California’s energy future — creating jobs and cleaning the air.”

The announcement came just days after the administration opened 13 million acres of federal land to coal mining and offered $625 million to extend the life of coal-fired plants. This sharp reversal underscores a renewed push toward fossil fuels, despite the climate crisis threatening communities, wildlife, and the environment.

Senator Alex Padilla warned that abandoning ARCHES would stall progress while the rest of the world accelerates clean energy development. Rep. Rosa DeLauro added that canceling projects will drive up energy costs and eliminate jobs.

The cuts may face legal challenges, but the message is clear: the administration is prioritizing coal and oil over clean energy, even as families face higher costs and a heating planet.
