A new study published in Environmental Science & Technology has revealed that many children’s mattresses contain toxic chemicals that may be harmful to their development and health. According to CNN, researchers detected high levels of phthalates, flame retardants, and UV filters in the air of children’s bedrooms—particularly near their beds.

The study involved air testing in 25 bedrooms of children aged six months to four years. One of the researchers, Professor Miriam Diamond from the University of Toronto, explained that the heat and weight of a sleeping child significantly increase the release of these chemicals into the air. A companion study testing 16 new mattresses confirmed that these products are a major source of chemical exposure, regardless of brand or price point.

Among the harmful substances found were banned flame retardants such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which have been linked to intellectual disabilities in children. Other chemicals, like phthalates, are known to interfere with hormones and are associated with reproductive issues, asthma, and cancer.

One disturbing finding: a mattress labeled as “certified safe” was found to contain a banned carcinogen at levels over legal limits. These toxins are not exclusive to bedding; they’re often found in household items, plastic toys, and even food containers.

Experts recommend using neutral-colored bedding, washing sheets and sleepers frequently, and minimizing synthetic materials to reduce exposure. But as Jane Houlihan of Healthy Babies, Bright Futures notes, “Parents can’t shop their way out of the problem.” Stronger regulations and truly non-toxic products are urgently needed.

We believe every child deserves a safe and healthy sleep. Until industry standards change, choose organic or secondhand mattresses when possible, skip the colorful sheets, and keep cribs free from synthetic extras. Every small change helps build a safer, kinder world—for children, animals, and the planet.
