A dangerous animal sedative called xylazine is showing up in street drugs at the U.S.-Mexico border, sparking serious concerns for public health. According to a new study from the University of California San Diego, researchers working with a free clinic in Tijuana found xylazine in the majority of drug samples tested—often mixed with fentanyl.
Xylazine is a veterinary tranquilizer not approved for human use. It causes deep sedation and, when combined with opioids, increases the risk of overdose, skin infections, and more complicated withdrawals. The research, published in the Journal of Addiction Medicine, confirms the substance is already circulating in Tijuana, raising concerns that it could spread rapidly into Southern California and other western U.S. states.
The team tested urine samples and drug paraphernalia from 23 opioid users in Tijuana. They found xylazine in over 80% of urine samples using Wisebatch strips, and confirmed its presence in over half of paraphernalia samples through lab testing. Fentanyl was found in every sample, with other additives like lidocaine and tramadol also present.
Lead researcher Dr. Joseph R. Friedman emphasized the need for increased drug-checking tools like xylazine test strips and more focused harm reduction efforts along the border. He also noted the rise of lidocaine in the drug supply may make testing less reliable—highlighting how rapidly this crisis is evolving.
Xylazine is already common on the East Coast. With the West now seeing signs of its arrival, public health officials are being urged to act fast to expand testing, monitoring, and education efforts.
If we care about protecting life—human and animal—it’s time to rethink the systems fueling these crises. Let’s advocate for compassionate healthcare, demand transparency in drug supply chains, and Support plant-based solutions that don’t depend on animal testing or suffering.
