A pilot dedicated to transporting rescue animals has tragically died in a plane crash in the snowy forests of upstate New York. According to Newsweek’s Matthew Impelli, 49-year-old Seuk Kim of Springfield, Virginia, was flying a small aircraft from Maryland to Albany when it went down near Windham in the Catskill Mountains on Sunday evening.

Authorities say the crash occurred around 6:10 p.m., with visibility severely limited due to snow and turbulence. Kim had reportedly requested a change in altitude shortly before the crash. Greene County Sheriff Peter Kusminsky confirmed that Kim died on impact. The flight was associated with a nonprofit that relies on volunteer pilots to transport rescue animals to shelters.

Among the three dogs onboard, one—a Labrador-mix puppy—miraculously survived despite suffering two broken legs. Sheriff Kusminsky told local media the pup was found “dug down into the snow” and is now receiving veterinary care. Sadly, one dog perished alongside Kim, and a third remains unaccounted for.

The crash site, located miles from the nearest road and covered in deep snow, was reached by emergency crews just before midnight. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

Tributes have poured in for Kim, described in a Facebook post by a family member as someone who “lived his dream and made the world a kinder place.” He leaves behind a wife, three children, and a legacy of compassion.

Let’s honor Seuk Kim not only with words but with action. Support local shelters, adopt instead of shop, and consider donating to animal rescue charities. Every kind gesture helps carry forward the mission he gave his life to.
