TikTok, the social media platform with more than a billion users, has announced updates to its community guidelines that are aimed at making the app a safer and more secure environment for its users. The updates, which will go into effect on April 21, include new policies on AI and climate misinformation.

The new policies on AI go beyond TikTok’s current policy on the technology, which simply states that it does not allow synthetic or manipulated media that misleads users by distorting the truth of events and causing significant harm to the subject of the video, other persons, or society. Synthetic or manipulated media that shows realistic scenes must now be clearly disclosed, and TikTok has added more detail about its existing policies regarding civil and election integrity, and age restrictions.

As part of the new guidelines, synthetic media that includes “highly realistic” digitally-created content of real people must be prominently labeled in the video. TikTok also won’t allow material that has been edited or combined in a way that could mislead a person about real-world events. Synthetic media showing a public figure in certain contexts, including educational content, will be allowed.

The app will now also be banning Climate change misinformation that undermines well-established scientific consensus, such as denying the existence of Climate change or the factors that contribute to it. The new policy comes after a report from last year revealed that TikTok search results were flooded with misinformation about Climate change.

Additionally, TikTok has added a new section that explains its age restrictions for young users, limiting overtly mature content to adults 18 years of age and older.

TikTok’s updated guidelines are a welcome step towards creating a safer and more secure online environment, and the company deserves credit for taking steps to address the potential misuse of AI and the spread of Climate change misinformation. However, as users, we also have a responsibility to play our part in keeping the platform safe and secure.

We can do this by reporting any content that violates TikTok’s community guidelines, and by being discerning in our own use of the platform. When we see content that seems too good (or too terrible) to be true, we should be asking questions and looking for corroborating evidence. By doing so, we can help to ensure that TikTok remains a fun, engaging, and safe platform for all its users.
