Thousands of Chinchillas Face Slaughter Before Romania’s Fur Farming Ban

Romania has decided to ban fur farming by the end of 2026, becoming the 16th EU member state to do so. While this decision brings hope to animal welfare advocates, the grim reality remains: an estimated 15,000 chinchillas will still be killed for their fur before the ban takes effect.

Investigations conducted in 2022 revealed the stark conditions on Romanian chinchilla farms, where animals are crammed into small wire cages, unable to engage in natural behaviors like dust bathing or socializing. Footage from these farms shows harrowing consequences of captivity, including stress-induced illnesses, fur loss, and even instances of females eating their young. The cruelty doesn’t stop there; approximately 100 to 150 chinchillas are killed to create just one fur coat, highlighting the staggering cost of luxury fashion.

“Chinchilla fur farms trade luxury for unimaginable cruelty,” said Thomas Pietsch of FOUR PAWS, a global animal welfare organization. FOUR PAWS is calling for an EU-wide prohibition on fur farming, aligning with the growing public demand for ethical alternatives and the declining fur market. In Romania alone, annual chinchilla pelt production has dropped sharply—from 30,000 pelts in 2013 to 7,500 last year.

The European Citizen Initiative “Fur Free Europe,” backed by advocates across seven EU countries, aims to secure a continent-wide ban on fur production and sales. With millions of animals like mink, foxes, and chinchillas suffering in fur farms annually, FOUR PAWS continues to push for legislative action to end this practice entirely.
