In a revealing study by the National Parks Conservation Association, the state of air quality within America’s treasured national parks has come under scrutiny, highlighting a pressing environmental challenge. The “Polluted Parks” report delivers a sobering overview, revealing that nearly all national parks are grappling with significant air Pollution issues that compromise the health of both visitors and the natural habitats they come to admire.

The study’s findings are particularly alarming for California’s national gems, with five of the state’s parks, including the iconic Sequoia, Yosemite, and Joshua Tree, making the top 10 list of the most polluted national parks in the United States. This places them alongside other affected areas like the Mojave National Preserve and Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico.
Air Pollution, coupled with the looming threat of climate change, stands as a formidable adversary against the sanctity of these natural wonders. According to the report, 97% of national parks are battling against air quality levels deemed significant or unsatisfactory, with a similar percentage suffering from the visual blight of haze Pollution. This environmental degradation not only tarnishes the visual majesty of the parks but also poses serious health risks to their flora, fauna, and human visitors.
NPCA listed the following as the top 10 national parks with unhealthy air:
The most polluted, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, face a dire situation. Here, the majestic landscapes, known for their ancient sequoias, are under siege by the dual threats of air pollution and Climate change, exacerbated by wildfires, drought, and invasive species. The origins of this Pollution are traced back to industrial activities, agricultural operations, and vehicular emissions throughout California, undermining the parks’ ecological health and visitor experience.
Despite these challenges, the NPCA’s report offers a glimmer of hope, noting modest improvements in air quality since its 2019 assessment. This highlights the potential for positive change through concerted Conservation efforts and stricter environmental policies.
The battle for cleaner air in America’s national parks is a testament to the broader struggle against environmental degradation. It serves as a call to action for both policymakers and the public to safeguard these natural treasures for future generations. As we face the consequences of air Pollution and climate change, the preservation of our national parks emerges not only as an ecological imperative but as a moral one, ensuring that these wonders continue to inspire awe and wonder for years to come.
