This powerful greenhouse gas is a key contributor to global warming, responsible for about 30% of the Climate change we’re experiencing. Thanks to the collaborative efforts and financial backing of tech giants like Jeff Bezos, Google, and SpaceX, the fight against methane Pollution is gaining unprecedented momentum.

Lifting off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, MethaneSAT’s journey into space is a pivotal moment for environmentalists worldwide. The launch, alongside a special program featuring key experts, will be live-streamed, offering a front-row seat to this historic event.
Methane emissions, arising from sources such as landfills, livestock, and fossil fuel extraction, have been vastly underreported. With methane being 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide over 20 years, addressing these emissions is crucial for slowing down Global warming. The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the nonprofit behind MethaneSAT, aims to change this by providing accurate, real-time data on methane leaks globally.
Orbiting Earth every 95 minutes, MethaneSAT will focus on oil and gas fields, targeting the largest contributors to global methane emissions. This satellite can survey vast areas quickly, significantly outpacing traditional aircraft-based methods. With its advanced capabilities, MethaneSAT is set to revolutionize how we identify and address methane leaks, offering a faster route to mitigating Climate change.
In a partnership with EDF, Google is developing a global methane Pollution map, employing AI to identify infrastructure linked to methane emissions. This synergy between satellite data and AI technology holds the promise of pinpointing leaks more efficiently, thus enabling better regulatory action.
The mission’s success could transform climate policy by providing tangible evidence of methane emissions, allowing for more accurate assessments of progress in climate action. Funded by an $88 million investment, with significant Support from the Bezos Earth Fund, MethaneSAT is not just a satellite launch; it’s a beacon of hope for a healthier planet. By early summer, we can expect the first batch of data, with a comprehensive global overview anticipated by 2025.
