Earlier this month, police detained several individuals attempting to bring lambs and goats to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem for a Passover sacrifice, according to The Times of Israel.

The ritual sacrifice was performed at the Jerusalem holy site in biblical times, and certain religious groups have been calling for its return in recent years. One of these groups, Returning to the Mount, saw its leader, Rafael Morris, arrested a couple of days before Passover as he was allegedly driving towards the Temple Mount with his son to sacrifice a lamb. Morris is detained almost every year at this time to stop him from performing this ritual.

Flyers were also handed out leading up to Passover, which promised financial rewards for those arrested on the Temple Mount and those who completed a successful sacrifice.

Many Israeli officials think that allowing the sacrifices to occur would provoke unrest in the Muslim population. Hundreds of thousands of Muslims will be visiting the site for the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which runs through much of April and is often accompanied by skirmishes between Israel and Palestinians.

Shmuel Rabinovitch, chief rabbi for the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, a group that oversees the entry point to the Temple Mount, is planning to ban animals being brought to the area.

“The Western Wall Heritage Foundation operates in accordance with the directions given by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel which, throughout the generations, has objected to any act of this sort [sacrifice], and in accordance with the authority of the rabbi of the Western Wall has prevented these sorts of acts for years and will continue to do so this year as well,” the foundation stated.

Returning to the Mount, however, has stated that it will continue to attempt to sacrifice animals.
