After Covid forced her to return home to complete her work, Owens started to work on a project she called Ingested and Entangled. She plans to create 46 portraits made out of discarded plastic that portray the most endangered animals as of right now. Owens has also invited school classes and community members to help her create these pieces of art to spread the message.
Owens explained, “I’m doing this because I want people to understand that it’s not easy to recycle these plastics, and they’re everywhere, and they affect these animals.”
Her current supersized art project is composed of plastic bags and shipping mailers, coming together to form an endangered Sperm whale. It is a time-consuming effort, but one that is well worth it if it brings more attention to the threats that these delicate species face.
Owens said, “The message is that plastic surrounds us and that things need to change or it’s going to cause huge problems for the environment.”
