The study involved 36 young and healthy adults who practiced 10 minutes of daily activity. Their brains were examined shortly after exercise sessions and showed better connectivity between the hippocampal dentate gyrus and cortical areas, which are linked to detailed memory processing.
Yassa, director of UCI’s Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory and the recently launched UCI Brain Initiative, said, “We don’t discount the possibility that new cells are being born. But that’s a process that takes a bit longer to unfold. What we observed is that these 10-minute periods of exercise showed results immediately afterward.”
A second study that involved older adults who were at risk of memory problems was also tested. They showed similar results to the young adult group, further indicating just how beneficial even mild physical activity can be for better memory.
Yassa said, “A little bit of physical activity can go a long way. “It’s encouraging to see more people keeping track of their exercise habits. By monitoring the number of steps they’re taking, for example. Even short walking breaks throughout the day may have considerable effects on improving memory and cognition.”
This study shows just how great an impact physical activity can have on the mind. So get out and get moving!
