Study Shows That Ants Carry Out Life-Saving Amputations

ants

Scientists have observed carpenter ants performing life-saving amputations on injured nest mates. This behavior, detailed in a study published in Current Biology, marks the first known instance of non-human animals conducting such surgical interventions.

Researchers, led by Dr. Erik Frank from the University of Lausanne, observed Florida carpenter ants (Camponotus floridanus) treating injuries to maximize survival. When ants suffered femur or thigh wounds, nest mates swiftly performed amputations at the trochanter joint, strategically preventing infection spread. Conversely, lower leg injuries received intensive wound care but not amputation, due to slower infection propagation.

The study highlights ants’ remarkable ability to diagnose and treat injuries, enhancing colony resilience in territorial conflicts. Such cooperative behaviors underscore insects’ sophisticated social adaptations, akin to other examples of altruism in the animal kingdom.
