Is that John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever? Is it a Michael Jackson music video? Nope, those dance moves are all bird! This is the flashy courtship dance of the red-capped manakin.
These birds literally moonwalks to impress their lady friends as they all gather at the avian equivalent of a singles’ bar. But that’s not all. Check out those moves! He can slide side to side, forward and backward. And he’s got some snazzy feathers to go with his moves. What’s more, just like a Flamenco dancer, some of the most important steps of the dance involve making percussive sounds with his wings and beak. After all, if he didn’t make a little noise, how is a girl supposed to know where to look?
Mini-avian Casanovas, these manakin males sure put in a lot of effort to impress the girls. I guess that makes them none too different from human males!
