Giant grouper fish, epinephelus itajara, a saltwater fish that is critically endangered in the wild. Found mainly in shallow tropical coral reefs.

Scientists have finally cracked the mystery behind the giant lips seen on some African cichlid fish—and it’s not just a quirky evolutionary trait. According to The Daily Galaxy, a study led by Dr. Nagatoshi Machii at the Tokyo Institute of Technology reveals that these plump lips are a product of parallel evolution and complex molecular biology, offering insights that stretch beyond fish and into human health.

Parallel evolution is when different species develop similar traits independently due to facing similar environmental pressures. In the case of cichlids living in lakes like Victoria, Malawi, and Tanganyika, their lips have evolved to help them forage and move through tight underwater crevices. Each lake’s cichlids evolved oversized lips separately, but for similar reasons—proof of nature’s incredible ability to adapt.

Digging deeper, the researchers found that the fish’s thick lips are packed with proteoglycans—protein-sugar molecules that retain water and help tissues stay strong and flexible. These proteoglycans, especially chondroitin sulfate, allow the lips to swell with water and grow big. Genes linked to this tissue development activate early in the fish’s life, setting the stage for lip hypertrophy from the juvenile stage onward.

Even more fascinating? The same molecules that give fish their signature pout are found in human conditions like keloids—thick, raised scars caused by excess tissue growth. This raises hopes that studying cichlids could eventually inform new treatments for human connective tissue disorders, as suggested by eLife.

This discovery isn’t just a deep dive into fish biology—it’s a reminder of the surprising ways all life on Earth is interconnected. From lake-dwelling fish to human skin cells, evolution shares a toolkit of proteins and genes that shape us all.

It’s a good time to reflect on how our choices affect the living world around us. Supporting plant-based living and protecting aquatic habitats helps preserve incredible species like the cichlids—and ensures we keep discovering nature’s hidden wonders. Let’s keep curiosity alive and compassion front and center.
