Some celebrity fan mail is about chart hits. Sarah McLachlan says hers is often about saving animals.

On Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, McLachlan said she still receives “10 or 20 letters a week” from people sharing their rescues or asking for help with charities. The messages trace back to her iconic ASPCA PSA from the 2000s, set to her 1997 song “Angel.” According to PEOPLE’s Bailey Richards, that one ad kept echoing through her life in ways she never expected.

She explained that the campaign “took on such a life of its own.” Years later, a New York food bank event even asked her not to play “Angel” because it felt too tied to the ASPCA. That is a strange problem to have, but it shows how sticky a message can be when it hits the heart.

McLachlan also said the song helped people through grief and hard moments. That kind of emotional link matters. It can move someone from feeling sad to doing something real for wildlife and shelter animals.

There is a bigger lesson here for the planet. Culture shifts behavior faster than most policy memos ever will. When we connect compassion with everyday choices, we can protect the environment and reduce suffering at the same time.

One of the simplest ways is food. Going plant based supports animal welfare, and it can benefit your health too.

If an old song can still inspire action, so can you. Donate, adopt, and choose kinder meals when you can.
