Innovations in airport safety are taking on a futuristic form as Alaska introduces “Aurora,” a dog-like Boston Dynamics robot, to mitigate wildlife hazards at Fairbanks International Airport. This innovative approach aims to prevent hazardous encounters between aircraft and migratory birds or other animals, enhancing overall airport safety.
The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities recently unveiled their latest “hire” on Instagram, showcasing Aurora’s role in augmenting airport safety measures. Ryan Marlow, the robot’s handler, explained during an address to the Alaska House and Senate transportation committees that Aurora emerged as the preferred solution after evaluating alternatives such as using drones to spray repellents like grape juice, deemed too risky. Instead, Aurora will undergo trials during the upcoming migratory bird season, conducting hourly patrols near the runways.
What sets Aurora apart is its role as a predator mimic, designed to evoke instinctual responses from wildlife without resorting to lethal or chemical means. Marlow elaborated on the versatility of Aurora, mentioning plans to modify its appearance to resemble foxes or coyotes to study how larger animals like bears and moose react. This approach addresses safety concerns and minimizes environmental impact and operational costs compared to traditional methods.
The Federal Aviation Administration’s database highlights the significant challenge posed by wildlife strikes near Alaskan airports, with 92 reported incidents last year alone. Aurora’s introduction represents a proactive step in mitigating such risks, leveraging advanced technology in a manner that is both effective and environmentally conscious.
However, while Aurora’s deployment appears promising, concerns have emerged regarding potential surveillance implications. Similar Boston Dynamics robots have garnered attention for their global trials in military and policing applications, prompting scrutiny over privacy and civil liberties. Critics have questioned the unintended consequences of integrating such technology into public spaces, highlighting the need for transparent oversight and accountability measures.
