RFK Jr. Threatens to Block U.S. Scientists from Writing In Medical Journals

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced a controversial plan to bar government scientists from publishing research in major medical journals such as The Lancet, JAMA, and the New England Journal of Medicine. According to The Washington Post, Kennedy dismissed the journals as “corrupt” and said they are controlled by pharmaceutical interests.

Instead, Kennedy proposed creating “in-house” journals under the Department of Health and Human Services, claiming these would soon become the “preeminent” sources of medical research. He also accused major public health agencies like the NIH and CDC of acting as “sock puppets” for Big Pharma. These accusations come amid broader concerns over the Trump administration’s undermining of science, especially as NIH funding has dropped by over $3 billion since Trump’s inauguration.

The proposal has drawn serious criticism from public health experts. Harvard Medical School’s Adam Gaffney warned that such a move would delegitimize taxpayer-funded science, stating that RFK Jr.’s plan threatens the credibility of research and could distort how scientific breakthroughs are shared globally.

Kennedy’s announcement follows other controversial actions, including halting CDC recommendations on COVID-19 vaccines for children and pregnant women. Meanwhile, the administration’s recently released “MAHA Report” has been called misleading by experts, sparking fears that anti-science rhetoric is being embedded into national health policy.

As the U.S. scientific community contemplates relocation to countries offering more research freedom and funding, the potential damage to public health, climate science, and environmental regulation cannot be overstated.

This is a wake-up call. Defending science means standing up for independent research, transparent data, and public health—not political agendas. Stay informed, Support independent medical research, and speak out against the suppression of science. Our planet, and our health, depend on it.
