Hurricane Florence hit a lot of places hard, displacing people and animals alike. Ziggy’s Refuge Farm Sanctuary had a battle on their hands rescuing all of the animals around them. Here is the story of Champ, a beautiful pig who survived the horrific ordeal!

Before the storm hit, Champ’s life was not an easy one. He was kept in a concentrated animal feeding operation where he no doubt experienced abuse and misery from the day he was born. Given his age and size, he was likely just weeks away from being taken to slaughter when the hurricane hit, so we could say that the hurricane hit at the perfect time for him!

Champ was injured in the storm. He had a broken leg when he floated out of the operation in the flood waters, surviving two weeks on his own in the wild before Ziggy’s could rescue him. As soon as Ziggy’s got Champ to safety they arranged for him to have a check-up at a vet. He had to have surgery on his broken leg, which initially went well, but since then, a severe infection has broken out.

Champ is unwell, essentially fighting for his life. He limps around his stall all day long, yet even though he must be scared and in pain, he has kisses for everyone! Champ often flops over in demand of belly rubs for anyone who puts their hand on his back. Sometimes the staff spoon him to keep him calm and comforted as they change his cast; this boy is a snuggler!

A further exploratory operation has not brought the best of news. Champ’s wound has been flushed out and antibiotic implants inserted that will be his best chance for fighting this awful infection. But despite how sick he is, Champ is clearly a fighter. He has won the hearts of every single member of the staff at Ziggy’s, and with their help will fight until he is well again.

Keep fighting, Champ, we are all rooting for you!
