It was such a treat to see the newly released photos posted by the Borneo Orangutan Survival (BOS) Foundation of the beautiful albino orangutan, appropriately named “Alba.” The photos were posted in recognition of International Albinism Awareness Day and BOS reported on their Facebook page, that Alba enjoys going outside in the shade during the coolest hours of the day and that she is doing really well!

Along with the help of the Central Kalimantan BKSDA, BOS rescued five-year-old Alba after she was held captive by local residents in the Tanggirang village, Kapuas Hulu. Look at her now!

Alba loves hanging out in the shade! Literally!

It was obvious to BOS that Alba was an albino orangutan due to her captivating eyes, hair, and skin color. Look how beautiful she is!

BOS Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Indonesia that cares for over 750 orangutans and employees over 400 staff members who are all dedicated to the Conservation of the Bornean Orangutan. BOS also contributes to saving the habitats of these magnificent animals with the help of the Indonesian Ministry of Foresty, local communities, and international partners.

Alba is certainly in good hands! Sadly, the Bornean orangutan as a whole is classified as a critically endangered species. Bornean Orangutans, like many animals that live in the rainforest, are an arboreal species. This means that they primarily live in the trees. Unfortunately, the rainforest habitat of the Bornean Orangutan and many other animals has declined by 80 percent over the last two decades. This decline is largely due to deforestation caused by palm oil production. According to scientific reports if immediate measures are not taken the orangutan could be extinct within the next 20 years.
