People holding their fists towards the sky

Tens of thousands of railway workers walked off the job, bringing Britain’s train network to a crawl in the country’s biggest transit strike in three decades. About 40,000 people are demanding appropriate wages to keep up with the rising cost of living, spiking inflation, and surging energy prices. The strike includes everyone from railway workers, maritime workers, bus drivers, baggage handlers at the airport, and more.

Mick Whelan, general secretary of ASLEF, said, “We don’t think we’re special; we believe no worker in this country should put up with pay cuts year after year just because this government has allowed inflation to rise.”

Although this walkout will cause great inconvenience and unexpected added costs, railway workers believe that strike action is the only choice they have to make both the rail industry and government acknowledge their concerns and make a change.
