May 28, 2020. Northern Illinois, USA. Dark brown, black, cattle with ear tags. The specks are flies.

In Rochelle, Illinois, a disturbing case of animal cruelty occurred during a steer tailing event, where at least five steers had their tails ripped off. One of the steers was left with a broken leg, and others were left lame, but shockingly, none received any veterinary care or pain relief. This practice, known as steer tailing, is not only brutal but also illegal under Illinois animal cruelty laws.

Steer tailing, also called bull tailing or coleadero, involves yanking a steer’s tail to drag or flip it to the ground, often causing severe injuries such as broken bones and degloving. The American Veterinary Medical Association opposes tail docking, and yet this inhumane practice is being allowed to continue without any consequences.

Illinois law already prohibits animal mistreatment, but enforcement is lacking. It’s time for stronger laws and immediate action to stop this violence.

Sign the petition today to demand that Illinois authorities act swiftly to end steer tailing and ensure these animals receive the care they need.
