Petition: Phase Out Gas Cars in New York and Illinois

The effects of Climate change are becoming more and more apparent with each wildfire, flood, hurricane, heatwave, and so on. Animal populations are declining, humans are facing more frequent and intense natural disasters, and scientists keep finding releasing new data about the severity of the climate crisis. There needs to be immediate, meaningful steps taken to fight Climate change and its effects. Otherwise, we risk losing so many different species of plants animals, as well as human lives.

One of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions is transportation. In the US, transportation accounts for 28% of total greenhouse gas emissions. While there is no simple way to compare gas and electric vehicles, due to the various factors to take into account, electric vehicles generally are much better for the environment and contribute less to greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, some countries, like Paris, have set goals to ban the sale of gas cars within a few years.

At the end of September, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that over the next 15 years, all purchasing of gas-only cars will be phased out. The only passenger vehicles that Californians will be allowed to procure will all be zero-emission. It is incredibly important that California has made this decision considering its large economy. It will help the environment, create new jobs, and also help to lower the cost of electric cars by stimulating the market for them.

One of the most impactful ways to fight Global warming is through direct and massive government action. The states that need to take action next are New York and Illinois. As two of the largest economies behind California in the entire nation, as well as significant manufacturing hubs, their lawmakers need to take their responsibility to safeguard our futures and our Earth seriously.

Sign this petition to demand that the governors and state legislatures in Illinois and New York follow California’s lead. Tell them to ban all emission-producing vehicle sales and require new cars to be emission-free!
