Tapanuli orangutans are the rarest great apes on Earth, with only around 800 individuals left. They are also the oldest orangutan species, tracing their lineage back nearly three million years in Sumatra. Yet despite their importance, a mining company is pushing to extract gold directly inside their last remaining habitat in Indonesia, putting this species on the brink of extinction.
Mining would mean forest destruction, new roads, heavy machinery, and constant human disturbance in an area these apes cannot afford to lose. Scientists warn that harming even one percent of the population each year could drive Tapanuli orangutans to extinction, especially since females reproduce only once or twice per decade. Conservation experts have called this project reckless and unnecessary, driven by profit rather than survival. The Indonesian government must act now by banning mining, deforestation, and construction in the Tapanuli habitat. Sign the petition now to protect these ancient orangutans before it is too late.
