Plastic pollution is severely damaging the planet. Our reliance on plastic is polluting our oceans, land, and killing marine life, in turn threatening many species and important ecosystems. The problem can no longer be ignored. Many cities, countries, and corporations around the world are implementing changes to tackle the issue. From changing packaging to banning single-use plastic products, it’s evident that action needs to be taken.

In 2011, National Park Service put a policy in place that didn’t ban, but did restrict the sale of plastic water bottles on National Parks. Specifically, 23 National Parks implemented the restrictions and visitors were encouraged to use refillable bottles and drink tap water. However, in 2017, the Trump administration reversed the policy.

Michael T. Reynolds, Deputy Director of Operations for the National Park Service said, “While we will continue to encourage the use of free water bottle filling stations as appropriate, ultimately it should be up to our visitors to decide how best to keep themselves and their families hydrated during a visit to a national park.”

The National Park Service exists to preserve spaces rich with heritage, history, and vital to communities. Their mission is about conservation and outdoor recreation. Therefore, plastic water bottles—given the damage they cause to the planet—should not be allowed or found anywhere on a National Park.

If you agree, sign this petition telling the National Park Service that they should do more to keep plastic water bottles out of national parks!
