Patagonia, the outdoor clothing company, is no stranger to standing up for the planet. A few years ago, they spoke up against fashion-induced deforestation. Two years ago, they donated $10 million of their Black Friday sales to environmental organizations. Just this year, they took part in the Global Climate Strike on September 20th by closing their stores. Now, they’ve accomplished quite the feat by changing one of their lines to become completely sustainable!

According to The Manual, Patagonia has been trying to make their products much more sustainable since 1993 when they debuted a fleece jacket made from recycled soda bottles. Their latest accomplishment though, includes an entire line of sustainable products. All 61 of the waterproof shells in their “Shell, Yeah” line are made from recycled materials and sewn in Fair Trade Certified factories.

The shells begin as a chip made of recycled plastic which is drained of petroleum and harmful chemicals, then broken down into a fiber. That fiber is then spun into a “yarn.” It’s time consuming and costs money, but it’s necessary for the planet. As Patagonia states in the video above, only 15 percent of what goes into recycled bins is actually recycled. Plastic pollution is severely harming the planet. Patagonia is not only recycling plastic in a way that no one else is, but they’re cutting their carbon footprint and have even announced that they plan to go carbon neutral by 2025!

We need more companies to put in the time, money, and effort into making their products more responsibly and sustainably, for the sake of the planet.
