Bertha the giant rabbit, who lives on an animal sanctuary owned by her mom, Melanie, suffered from collapsed hips earlier this year and became unable to walk. Bertha’s veterinarian told Melanie that after that kind of injury, the humane thing to do would be to put her to sleep.
Unable to bear the thought, Melanie thought of another solution: What about a bunny wheelchair? It works for dogs, cats and turtles. Why not a rabbit?
Bertha seems very happy in her wheelchair, and in time, Melanie hopes that Bertha will regain mobility in her back legs.
The sweet rabbit isn’t the only animal to get special needs accommodations. In addition to wheelchairs for animals who can’t walk, many blind animals have their own seeing-eye dogs, like these two pals, and some dogs losing their vision get to have their very own halo that keeps them from running into things. Clearly, Bertha is in great company.
