A major offshore wind project off Virginia Beach just hit a sudden federal stop. Now the developer is fighting back in court. According to CNBC, Dominion Energy Virginia sued after a Trump administration order paused five offshore wind projects.

The Interior Department did not spell out the security concerns in public. Instead, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management opened a 90 day review window, with possible extensions. Dominion says its Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has been under construction since early 2024. It was expected to come online in early 2026. The company says it could power about 660,000 homes.

So why the urgency? Dominion points to load growth from new data centers. It argues offshore wind helps meet that demand without more fossil fuel Pollution. It also says the pause is burning money fast. The company estimates losses of more than $5 million a day for ships working around the clock.

This order is not only about Virginia. It also affects projects in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. As a result, governors in those states are pushing back, too. For communities, that means more uncertainty around jobs, energy bills, and climate goals.

Of course, offshore wind must be built responsibly. Thoughtful siting and timing can reduce harm to wildlife and other animals. It can also protect the ocean ecosystem that supports coastal life. However, a broad freeze can backfire. When clean projects stall, fossil fuels often fill the gap. That can harm the environment and public health. It also puts Earth at greater risk.

A hearing on Dominion’s request for a temporary restraining order is set for Monday afternoon. If you want a safer climate and a more vegan future, keep supporting renewables and choosing plant based meals when you can.
