One of the world’s largest renewable energy developers, Ørsted, has announced it will cut around a quarter of its global workforce after a tumultuous year for the wind industry. According to The Guardian, the Danish company—half-owned by the state—plans to reduce 2,000 of its 8,000 positions by 2027 as it refocuses on European and Asian markets.
The move follows political turbulence in the United States, where the Trump administration abruptly ordered a halt to work on Ørsted’s nearly completed Revolution Wind project off the coast of Rhode Island. The order caused the company’s share price to crash to an all-time low and forced it to raise over $9 billion to stabilize operations. While a court has since allowed the project to resume, the disruption has shaken investor confidence and underscored the fragility of the clean energy transition under anti-renewable leadership.
Ørsted’s CEO, Rasmus Errboe, described the cuts as a “necessary consequence” of shifting priorities and a challenging global supply chain marked by inflation and rising costs. The company also recently canceled plans for one of the UK’s largest offshore windfarms, citing economic pressures.
Despite the short-term turbulence, the demand for renewable energy remains immense. Offshore wind has the potential to power millions of homes with clean energy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and help protect the planet from the accelerating climate crisis. But progress requires stable political Support, not obstruction from leaders unwilling to back the future of sustainable energy.
The global community can’t afford to let renewable progress stall. Supporting companies like Ørsted—and the broader clean energy movement—means standing up for a healthier environment, resilient green jobs, and a more sustainable world for generations to come.
