New York City is already host to a dazzling array of cultural experiences. However, soon one more will be added to the scene. A new performing arts center will be opening in 2026. This center is called The People’s Theater: Centro Cultural Inmigrante. The theater has been partially funded by the Miranda family, which includes well-known composer, lyricist, and actor Lin Manuel Miranda.
The People’s Theater will occupy a 19,000-square-foot space located in Manhattan’s Inwood and Washington Heights neighborhoods. The neighborhood is known for its diverse cultural history and has been home to many immigrant groups over the centuries. The People’s Theater is committed to centering and highlighting the experience of the many diverse immigrant communities that thrive in New York City. According to a statement from the project’s website, the center “ will amplify the voices of New York City’s diverse immigrant communities and cultivate work by local artists and arts organizations.”
The performing arts center will be housed in a mixed-use housing project. In addition to the theater, the project will create nearly 700 housing units. Of those, 281 will be affordable housing units. The capital budget for the project is 37 million dollars.
The People’s Theater will be the largest Latina-operated theater in New York State. Not only will audiences be able to watch theater performances, dance shows, and film screenings, but classes and other community programs will be held there. Scholarships will be available according to the center’s website. Additionally, the performing arts center is expected to create 270 jobs and generate over 43 million dollars in revenue. Statements from the organization have said that they expect to draw over 28,000 audience members and 300 artists each year.
The project’s groundbreaking was held on October 25, 2023. New York State Governor, Kathy Hochul, was in attendance. Although the projected completion of the project is over two years away, the center is already being hailed as a “tribute to the diverse artists, cultures, and communities that define our great state.”
