In her book, Whispers from the Wild: An Invitation: Stories From the Rescued Animals of Earthfire Institute, Dr. Susan Eirich tells the story of several rescued wild animals and their interactions with each other and their human caretakers. A trained psychologist, Eirich investigates the myriad of ways in which wild animals and humans can impact each other. The book deals not only with these cross-species interactions but also highlights the intelligence of wild animals. Additionally, it delves into their emotional capacity as well as pondering their spiritual lives.

Dr. Eirich began to dive into the wonderful world of wild animals after raising a litter of wolf puppies. From there, she went on to found the Earthfire Institute. Located in Driggs, Idaho the Earthfire Institute is a wildlife sanctuary and retreat center. Not only do they aim to help rescue and rehabilitate wild animals in need, but the center promotes human connection to nature and empathy for the wild creatures that inhabit it. The Earthfire Institute highlights the intelligence and emotional capacity for the connection of wild animals.

Whispers from the Wild dives into the connection between wild animals and humans. From wolves to bears, the book highlights a myriad of wild creatures and their intellectual awareness. Eirich explores the relationships that humans can have with animals of other species, and the relationships that wild animals have with each other.

By sharing the stories of these wild animals, Dr. Eirich attempts to remind readers of the deep connection humans can have with nature. By learning about the lives and experiences of rescued wild animals, she hopes that people will be more able to feel empathy and compassion for these creatures. Ideally, she feels this will promote preserving ecosystems, habitats, and these unique beings.
