A secretive startup is quietly working on technology that could reshape the future of climate intervention. As reported by Ramin Skibba for Wired, Stardust, an Israeli–US company, is designing proprietary aerosol particles to block some of the sun’s rays and temporarily cool the planet. This new form of solar geoengineering could be deployed by aircraft, but critics say the risks are far from understood—and transparency is lacking.

Unlike university-led climate experiments subject to peer review and public input, Stardust operates more like a defense contractor. It’s received around $15 million in venture capital and has ties to former intelligence and military figures through its backers. The company says it is committed to safety and transparency, but so far, it hasn’t published any research or fully disclosed its leadership team.

Solar geoengineering is not a new idea. Nature has already shown it can work—after Mount Pinatubo erupted in 1991, sulfate particles cooled the Earth for over a year. However, Stardust’s particles are not sulfates, and experts say we don’t yet understand their effects. Critics, including former UN climate adviser Janos Pasztor, are urging the company to publish its code of conduct and involve the public before real-world testing begins.

Groups like Friends of the Earth and the Center for International Environmental Law warn that companies like Stardust are accelerating a dangerous race, with no global rules in place. If deployed, geoengineering could impact weather systems, disrupt ecosystems, and deepen global inequality—yet it may soon be sold to the highest bidder.

If the climate crisis demands action, it must come through open science, democratic debate, and nature-based solutions. Let’s focus on protecting our planet with proven, regenerative methods—not playing planetary roulette behind closed doors.
