The United States is stepping up efforts to detect international geoengineering activities amid growing experiments aimed at climate alteration. According to a recent New York Times article, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Department of Energy are setting up mechanisms to track “solar geoengineering” activities worldwide. This initiative focuses on deploying aerosols into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight away from Earth, a technique that may mitigate the symptoms of Climate change but not the root causes.

Concerns are rising among scientists that such interventions could lead to adverse weather patterns and disproportionately affect different regions around the globe. The NOAA, recognizing the potential risks and the increased number of pilot tests for geoengineering, is enhancing its surveillance capabilities to identify and monitor these activities.

To aid in these efforts, NOAA’s Chemical Sciences Laboratory is launching high-altitude balloons equipped with sensors capable of detecting aerosol concentrations. These balloons will float miles above the Earth, sending back data on aerosol locations and quantities, enabling precise tracking of geoengineering sites.

While numerous nations have pledged not to engage in solar geoengineering, the fear remains that some may proceed with such projects clandestinely. “Understanding whether a major ally or opponent is engaging in geoengineering and determining the potential impacts is crucial,” noted Kelly Wanser, founder of SilverLining, a non-profit focused on geoengineering oversight.

The initiative is also supported by advanced algorithms developed by senior scientist Laura Swiler at Sandia National Laboratories, which can analyze past aerosol releases to predict their origins and potential impacts. These tools are essential for anticipating the long-term effects of aerosol injections, which could persist for years, influencing global weather patterns and environmental conditions.

Together, the advanced tracking balloons and analytical tools will enhance the United States’ ability to monitor and understand the implications of geoengineering efforts, ensuring a proactive approach to managing global climate interventions.
