We’ve all heard that eating a square or two of dark chocolate once in awhile is good for us. Now, a new study confirms even more good news.

Researchers found that consuming dark chocolate reduced the number of white blood cells that adhere to artery walls and that it could also improve artery flexibility, according to a study published in the March 2014 issue of The FASEB Journal. This means that regular dark chocolate eaters could lower their risk of atherosclerosis, a disease of plaque build up in the arteries that could lead to “serious problems, including heart attack, stroke, or even death.”

The study also disproved a long held notion that a lack of flavanol, a compound that has antioxidant qualities, in dark chocolate makes it not good for us. However, the researchers of this study found that the levels of flavonols did not affect heart health.
