Think eating carrots, apples, or sipping tea is a safe bet for your health? Think again. A recent article by Ellyn LaPointe for DailyMail.com reveals that many foods often labeled as “healthy” are actually contaminated with microplastics—tiny plastic particles linked to cancer, DNA damage, and more.
Microplastics, which measure less than 5mm, are found in soil, water, air, and now—alarming amounts of our food. Scientists have recently detected microplastics even in the remote regions of Antarctica.
According to studies cited in the report, root vegetables like carrots absorb microplastics from the soil, while fruits like apples can contain over 100,000 particles per gram. Rice, especially the instant kind, can deliver up to 13 milligrams of plastic per serving. And it doesn’t stop there—plant-based nuggets, seafood, and even trendy Pink Himalayan salt aren’t spared.
Some of the worst offenders are everyday staples: bottled water can contain up to 240,000 plastic particles per litre, while nylon tea bags may release over 11 billion plastic particles into a single cup. Even honey made in urban areas is contaminated, as bees bring plastics back to the hive.
While eliminating microplastics entirely is unrealistic, experts suggest practical swaps—like using loose-leaf tea, washing rice before cooking, making plant-based meals at home, and choosing organic, unprocessed options. Every small choice matters.
Let’s not sugarcoat it: the plastic problem is in our food, and it’s not going away on its own. The solution? Be picky. Cook more. Buy local. And go plant-based when you can—but skip the processed stuff. Our planet and our bodies deserve better.
