Microchipped Sick Pug Abandoned, Rescue Steps in to Save Him

Portrait of old, sick Pug.

Short Noses Only Rescue (SNORT) is a rescue that specializes in brachycephalic dogs, or dogs that have unusually short snouts. Recently, they received a heartbreaking call. During the call, local rescuers informed them that a sick Pug had been found as a stray. The Pug, who is named Otis, was microchipped. However, when the number from the microchip was contacted, they claimed that Otis was not their dog. The sick Pug was suffering from serious ear infections, skin issues, dry eyes, and back-end weakness.

Although Otis is struggling with his health issues, he is beginning to recuperate after being in SNORT’s care. Despite his past, the rescue says that the sweet pug is “overflowing with love” and the “ultimate snuggle buddy”. Although the sick Pug will not be available for adoption until he has recovered, he is currently in a foster home where he is receiving lots of attention and love.

According to the Humane Society, brachycephalic dogs like Otis are often victims of poor breeding practices. Although many of these breeds are extremely popular, they can suffer a host of problems due to their shortened airways. Brachycephalic dogs may be at higher risk for breathing problems, allergies, heatstroke, and eye issues than dogs with longer snouts. The Humane Society reminds people intent on owning these breeds that there will likely be additional veterinary costs throughout the dog’s lifetime. Extra care requirements such as skin fold cleaning and temperature-controlled environments should also be considered. Additionally, they urge people to rescue brachycephalic dogs from organizations such as SNORT rather than contribute to ongoing problematic breeding.
