Larger dogs who look intimidating can be some of the sweetest, gentlest dogs around. Take, Spartacus for example, an Akita who weights 125 pounds. Our dog friends always bring smiles to our faces, but this Akita in particular has been instrumental in helping children after the Sandy Hook tragedy.

After the shooting, one student named Samantha was having a very difficult time returning to school. But thanks to Spartacus, a therapy dog registered with Pet Partners, she is now doing much better. Spartacus has been an important part of the healing process for her. Samantha’s mother Jill says the first time she got Samantha to leave the house again, the school had coordinated therapy dogs and counselors to be on site to help. Spartacus was one of the therapy dogs at the school.

These therapy dogs allow children to have comfort and a friend to be with and pet without having to talk or share feelings. Spartacus is what got Samantha to initially go inside the school, and she spent two full hours with the dog. Spartacus didn’t even want to leave her side! The two have been great friends ever since.
