A 48-year-old man from Missouri is urging others to pay closer attention to their bodies after a surprising cancer diagnosis changed his life. Shawn Michael, from Springfield, shared his story in a viral video on The Patient Story’s YouTube channel, where he detailed how he mistook a persistent symptom for something far less serious.

Michael had been struggling with what he thought was simple constipation. When over-the-counter remedies failed, he visited an urgent care center that gave him aggressive treatment, which provided temporary relief. But, as he put it, something still “felt off.”

Two days later, the pain returned. A CT scan revealed a large mass in his colon. Doctors diagnosed him with stage four colorectal cancer and scheduled immediate surgery. During the operation, surgeons removed a significant portion of his colon along with several tumor-like growths found on his omentum—a layer of fatty tissue that helps protect the organs. Doctors were shocked the mass hadn’t ruptured, which could have been life-threatening.

Despite the severity of the diagnosis, Michael remains optimistic. His doctors are hopeful due to his relatively young age and good overall health. He is now undergoing chemotherapy in the hopes of removing the remaining cancer cells. Michael’s story serves as a powerful reminder that even common symptoms should never be ignored.

Let’s take this as another reason to think more deeply about what we put into our bodies and how we live. A plant-based diet rich in fiber has been linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer. Staying informed, getting regular check-ups, and making compassionate food choices not only Support our health but also the planet and the animals we share it with.
