For the first time in over a century, cancer diagnoses among women aged 50 to 64 have outpaced those in men, according to a study by the American Cancer Society (ACS). Published in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, the research reveals that cancer rates in younger women, particularly those under 50, have risen significantly. In fact, cancer rates for women in this age group are now 82% higher than for men, a dramatic increase from the 51% gap reported in 2002.

Breast cancer has been identified as a key driver of this trend. The study found that cases among women under 50 have been increasing by 1.4% annually since the mid-2000s, nearly double the growth rate seen in older women.

Dr. Arif Kamal, the ACS’s chief patient officer, emphasized the growing disparity: “We’ve got more cancers overall, particularly those in younger people, and particularly those in women. Ten years ago, men were 50% more likely to get cancer than women. Today, it’s almost close to even.”

While the exact reasons for the increase remain unclear, experts point to rising obesity rates and potential genetic and environmental factors. Dr. Kamal highlighted the role of lifestyle choices, stating, “There are 13 different cancers associated with being overweight. There are seven different cancers associated with alcohol intake.”

The study also noted improvements for men, such as declining lung cancer rates since 1975. However, the incidence of prostate cancer has seen a rise, underscoring the complexity of cancer trends across genders.

These findings underline the urgent need for targeted cancer prevention and awareness efforts, particularly for women in younger age groups. Addressing risk factors like obesity, alcohol consumption, and smoking may play a crucial role in reversing these trends.
