We like to bring our dogs everywhere with us, but taking them to a pool, lake or the beach during the summer time can be dangerous if your four-legged friend doesn’t know how to swim. For the most part, dogs instinctively know how to keep themselves afloat in the water, and most can swim, but it’s not always guaranteed that a dog who has never seen water before will know how to doggy paddle.
Take this large Mastiff, Sailor, for example. Clearly, this is not a pooch who appears to be very buoyant. Even though she is outfitted with a life vest, she does not look very convinced that she will in fact be able to stay above water. As her patient guardian guides her into the water, Sailor reluctantly ventures further and further into the water until finally…touch down!
Slowly twirling through the water, the guardian makes sure that Sailor feels safe and even has a little fun. Who knows, maybe next time Sailor will be paddling away all on her own!

I\’ve had to do this with some of my dogs, from a lab/pit to a Chihuahua. They all have live vests (that one looks a bit small though). ALWAYS, ALWAYS show them where the steps are so if they fall in they can get out.
