Latin America is currently facing a climate crisis. Recent reports by the World Meteorological Organization indicate that extreme weather conditions are causing immense damage, costing billions, and creating a dangerous cycle that exacerbates Climate change.

Over the past 30 years, the region has seen temperatures rise by an average of 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade – the highest rate on record. This increase in temperatures is causing more frequent extreme weather events which have unexpected and climate-damaging consequences.
One such consequence is a surge in demand for fossil fuels due to decreased hydroelectricity production, brought about by prolonged droughts. Interestingly, despite being a region with immense potential for renewable energy, the circumstances have pushed the region further into fossil fuel dependence.
The report further notes that 2022’s wildfires across Latin America, fuelled by dry soils and extreme heat, led to a 20-year high spike in carbon dioxide emissions, which drives up temperatures and increases disaster risk.
World Meteorological Organization’s Secretary-General, Petteri Taalas, explains that many of these extreme events are influenced by both the long-running La Nina and human-induced Climate change. And the arrival of El Nino is expected to increase temperatures and bring more extreme weather.
In 2022, drought and storms caused an estimated $9 billion in economic damages, highlighting the severity of this issue. As Latin America grapples with these issues, it’s clear that global action, guided by agreements like the 2015 Paris Agreement, is more critical than ever.
Despite the significant impacts of climate change, implementation of the Paris Agreement and its goals has been slow, especially in developing countries. If left unchecked, the impacts of Climate change are set to intensify, pushing more regions into this vicious cycle. Therefore, the call for immediate and decisive action to combat Climate change has never been more urgent.
