Italy is about to make history for animal lovers. Next week, the country’s first commercial flight permitting large and medium-sized dogs to travel in the cabin alongside their guardians will take off, according to Wanted in Rome.

Until recently, only small pets under strict weight limits were allowed on board, while most airlines forced bigger dogs into the cargo hold. That’s changing after new rules approved by Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC earlier this year. The milestone flight, expected to be operated by ITA Airways on the Milan-Rome route, will mark a turning point for humane travel. Dogs must be kept in a secure carrier attached to a seat, and the total weight of dog plus carrier must not exceed that of an average passenger.

The announcement came during the Italian Pet Summit, with Transport Minister Matteo Salvini noting how the issue of pets has social, emotional, and even economic significance. He also highlighted new penalties against abandoning animals on roadsides and proposed allowing ministry employees to bring their dogs to work.

The changes align with broader trends: Italian railways already make it easier to travel with dogs, especially during summer. Last year, ITA Airways even raised the cabin weight limit for animals from 8 kg to 10 kg. Now, the expanded rules mean families can keep their beloved animals by their side at 30,000 feet instead of risking the trauma and dangers of cargo transport.

Advocates say the move is both compassionate and forward-thinking, reflecting how deeply pets are valued as family. For guardians, it eases stress, strengthens bonds, and could encourage more people to choose pet-friendly travel. For the dogs themselves, it promises a safer, more comfortable journey.

Italy’s decision is sparking global conversation, and animal welfare supporters hope it will inspire airlines in other countries to follow suit. Traveling with dignity and care should extend to all beings, and this shift represents a win for compassion in the skies.
