India is building renewable power at a pace that deserves global attention. Solar in particular has surged, and that growth matters for the planet because India is now central to the future of climate action. But this story is not a simple clean energy victory lap. It is also about what it takes to keep the lights on for 1.4 billion people while demand keeps rising.
According to Forbes, India’s solar capacity has jumped from 4 gigawatts to 140 gigawatts in just ten years. That is huge. Even so, coal still provides most of the country’s electricity, and leaders are being blunt about why. Industry is growing fast, cities are using more air conditioning, and power demand is climbing much faster than the grid can comfortably handle.
That tension is the real story. India wants more renewable energy, more storage, and more modern transmission lines. Yet it also sees coal as a backup while those systems catch up. For a country trying to balance development, health, and the environment, that is a hard line to walk.
There is still reason for hope. India could reach 500 gigawatts of non fossil power by 2030 if it keeps expanding transmission, storage, and domestic manufacturing. The country is also exploring green hydrogen and smart grid upgrades, which could help heavy industry run on cleaner power over time. Still, the financing challenge is enormous. The International Energy Agency says India needs about $160 billion a year through 2030 to stay on track for its energy transition.
So yes, India is moving fast, but speed alone is not enough. The world should pay attention because what happens there will shape the climate future for everyone on Earth. Support clean power, protect the Earth, and choose plant based solutions where you can.
