Those flimsy black plastic pots your flowers and herbs come in might seem harmless, but most end up clogging landfills instead of being reused. The good news? You don’t need to throw them out. According to House Digest’s Suzanne Bonnett, The Home Depot has an easy, nationwide solution that turns these plastic containers into something greener.
Since 2009, Home Depot has partnered with East Jordan Plastics to collect used plant pots from customers. They then transform them into new, 100% recyclable containers for garden centers and nurseries. The initiative has already kept over 16 million pounds of plastic from hitting the landfill—and customers barely have to lift a finger to take part.
Here’s how it works. After you’ve finished planting your garden goodies, gather up your used pots and head to any Home Depot location. Near the entrance of the garden center, you’ll see a rack with a recycling sign—just drop off your used plastic containers there. You don’t need to clean or sort them, and they don’t even have to be from Home Depot.
This small habit can help recover up to 60% of the energy that originally went into producing the plastic. That’s a big win for your garden and the planet. It’s also a reminder that sustainable choices can be as simple as pausing before you toss something in the bin.
Let’s give our plants—and the planet—a better shot. Next time you shop for blooms, don’t let those pots go to waste. Recycle them, or even better, switch to biodegradable alternatives when possible.
