Farm animals are rarely afforded the respect they deserve. Despite their mental and emotional abilities, animals like cows, pigs, and chickens are treated as nothing more than non-feeling commodities in the animal agriculture industry. Or at least is the way that most people in the animal agriculture industry view farm animals.
For 16-year-old Orange County High School student, Bruno Barba, however, meeting Lola the pig changed his outlook forever. Barba was tasked with raising a pig as part of his school’s Future Farmers of America program, but the more he got to know his piggy, the less he wanted to sell her for slaughter at the end of the program.
With a little help and determination, Barba was able to arrange for Lola to go to Farm Sanctuary upon the program’s completion, where she would be able to live out her days in peace and happiness.
In recognition of this amazing and kind act, Farm Sanctuary honored Bruno with the “Friends Not Food” award at their recent gala.
Now Bruno works to inspire others to see animals for who they truly are rather than what they are.
Way to go, Bruno!
