Greenpeace has launched a new social media campaign targeted at major corporations that use millions of tons of plastic to package their products. “Are you tired of corporations and retailers using throwaway plastic? Tell them!” The organization urges and asks us to join by taking a photo of excessive single-use packaging and sharing it with the hashtag #BreakFreeFromPlastic – and tagging the company responsible for it.

The video promoting the campaign reminds us that the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters the oceans every single minute. Non-biodegradable plastic waste pollutes the natural habitat and threatens the very existence of hundreds of marine species. Microscopic particles of plastic get back to us but not only through seafood – plastic now pollutes the majority of the world’s tap water and even bottled water. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is bigger than we have thought and it keeps growing. Plastic waste has even found its way into the Arctic Ocean!

It is now critical for corporations to recognize that their tactics when it comes to packaging are causing the planet enormous harm that will become irreversible. Major companies have to start making changes now – you can sign a petition asking one of them, Coca-Cola, to reduce its use of plastic here.
